Sarah Spells Obituary

Sarah Catherine Spells passed away peacefully on April 2, leaving behind a legacy of compassion. Born on January 6, 1941, in Turnbull, North Carolina to the late Manly and Josephine Whitted, Sarah’s life was a testament to the joy found in serving others.

Sarah was educated in the public schools of Bladen County, NC and dedicated her professional life to caring for those who needed help caring for themselves. Her final tenure was caring for newborns as a nurse’s aide in the nursery at Brazosport Memorial Hospital (now CHI St. Luke’s), where she touched the lives of thousands of families. She retired from CHI St. Luke’s in 2021.

Throughout her life, Sarah enjoyed traveling with family and friends and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family, often centered around their extracurricular activities. Whitted Family Reunion was always a don’t miss activity.  Additionally, she continued her service rooted in her unwavering faith.  She was a devoted member of Dove’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Turnbull, NC, St. Luke’s AME Zion Church in Buffalo, NY, and her final church home, Bethel Full Gospel Baptist Church in Freeport, TX.  She was always happy to serve the church in formal ways, but found the most joy in brightening the day of members and families alike with her talents.

Sarah had many talents, honed through practice and experiment.  She was an outstanding cook and baker and was always happy to make the specialties that were favorites of friends and family.  Getting a box in the mail from Richwood, TX containing a brown sugar pound cake or banana bread was always a treat around your birthday (or your child’s birthday).  From sewing clothes for her children in the 1970’s to crafting intricate quilts Sarah was always eager to use her talent to help others.

Sarah was predeceased by her beloved husband of 53 years, John Henry Spells; her parents, Manly and Josephine Whitted; her sisters, Mary Frances Ray and Lula Beatrice White; her brothers, Reverend Dr. Andrew Eugene Whitted and Sergeant 1st Class Bertie O’Neal Whitted; and her niece who was more of a sister, Evelyn Robertson.

Sarah’s memory will be cherished by her loving family: her devoted sons, Daniel Spells, Sr. (Dorcas) and Darrell Spells (Lori); her adoring daughter, Dr. Rosalind Spells; her grandchildren, Daniel, Jr., John, Luke, Mark, Tabitha, Kayla, Nia, Jackson, and Ashton; and her great-grandchildren, Andrew and Skylar. She also leaves behind her brother, Frederick O'neal Whitted, and sister, Exie Lenora Mitchell, as well as a host of loving brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the caring professionals at Country Village Care, St. Luke's Hospital-Woodlands, and Choice Hospice, for their compassionate care during Sarah’s final days.

Mom, we thank you for all of the sacrifices you made to provide opportunities for us.  You taught us so much about humility and service.  We love you. Danny, Darrell and Ros.
