Funeral services for Reverend James Elroy Higgins, age 70, of Brazoria County, are scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Mount Zion Church in Brazoria, TX. with Elder Roland Hendricks officiating and Rev. L. C. Dews eulogizing. He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery in Brazoria, TX.
Reverend Higgins passed away at his residence on Friday, February 7, 2025. He was well-known for his infectious laughter, which will be deeply missed by family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, playing chess and dominoes, attending rodeos, spending time with loved ones, and watching his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys.
James Elroy Higgins, affectionately known as "Big Higg," graduated from Sweeny High School in 1972, where he played varsity football. Subsequently, James earned a welding certification from Brazosport College and later went on to work as a pipe- fitter, planner and heavy craft trainer at Phillips 66 for 35 years.
He was a dedicated member who served as deacon and church treasurer at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the guidance of Pastor L.C. Dews. On July 5, 2015, he answered his call to the ministry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Timothy and Susie Higgins and sister, Clara Smith.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Helen; loving children, Suzonne Higgins (Desmond), Pamela Pettie, and Seretha Gregg (Stepphun);brother, Pastor Tim Higgins, III (Mona); nine grandchildren: Johnathan Lewis, Jr. (Bria), Makiyah Coleman, Latoya Pettie, Shawn Pettie (JaQuata), Najee Johnson (Missy), Cody Spencer, Josh Spencer, Marquise Bonner, and Timothy Young (Valerie); and seventeen great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and good friend W. T. Lewis (Novell) of Lake Jackson.
Active pallbearers will be Babe Alston, Billy “Bo” McGowan, C. L. Allison, Troy Wright, Woody Smith, Hilliard Fields, James Teague, Jr., Treylan Teague and Kerry Wright.
Honorary pallbearers will be Johnathan Lewis, Jr., Tim Higgins III, Johnnie Higgins, Shawn Pettie, Cody Spencer, Josh Spencer, Marquise Bonner, Timothy Young, Jr., Jeremiah Woodard and Curtis Stredic.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 22 from 10:30-11:00 a.m. at Greater Mount Zion Church.
Final arrangements will be entrusted to Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria at 979-798-9113
