Funeral services for Otis James Petteway, Jr., 71, of Bay City, TX, will be Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Church, Brazoria, TX. Pastor Joseph Mayes officiating and Pastor Otis Petteway, III eulogizing. Burial will follow at Petteway Cemetery in Cedar Lake, TX.
On March 26, 1954, Otis Petteway Jr. was born to Otis Sr. and Ruby Lee Petteway. He grew up in Bethlehem Christian Church (Cedar Lake, TX), was baptized there, and graduated from Van Vleck High School's Class of 1972, where he excelled in sports and currently holds the record for the 1600-meter run.
Otis worked faithfully throughout his life, most notably as COO of Petteway Septic Systems and as a longtime employee of Brand. In 1979, he met the love of his life, Velda Elaine Fields, and they married on August 9, 1980. Together, they raised three children: Chandra Fields, Otis Petteway III, and Carlton Fields.
A devoted servant of the Lord, Otis was a dedicated member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church (Brazoria, TX) under the leadership of Pastor L. C. Dews. He served in many capacities, including usher, Sunday School teacher, financial secretary, secretary of the deacon board, vice president of the laymen, choir member, and Sunday School superintendent, and he later became a deacon—roles he cherished deeply.
In January 2020, Otis was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He faced his illness with unwavering faith and courage until he gained his eternal victory on January 30, 2026.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Otis Sr. and Ruby Petteway, and his sisters, Jewel Petteway-Johnson, Beverly Petteway, and Marsha Petteway-Giles.
