John Henry Haynes was born on February 3, 1949, in Freeport, Texas, to Jessie James Haynes and Johnnie Mae Hadden Haynes. He graduated from Palacios High School in 1970, where he was part of the first class of African American graduates, marking an important milestone in local history. He was 76 years old and a resident of Richwood, Texas, when he fell asleep in death on October 1, 2025, at CHI St. Luke’s Health–Brazosport Hospital in Lake Jackson, Texas.
John Henry loved Jehovah and made a personal dedication to serve Him before his baptism on June 18, 1988. His faith guided everything he did and gave him strength, purpose, and a real hope for the future. He enjoyed sharing Bible truths with others and helping them learn about the wonderful hope found in God’s Word, the Bible.
He worked for 33 years at the Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas, as a chemical plant operator. He later worked for eight years with Brazosport Independent School District as a bus driver. He was known for his strong work ethic, kindness, and willingness to help others.
He never stopped loving vehicles and didn’t mind getting his hands dirty. He had an ear for engines and enjoyed the sound when one was running just right. That gentle purr or deep rumble always caught his attention, and he would smile and say, “That sounds good.” When he wasn’t around vehicles, another of his favorite pastimes was collecting coins. He took pride in gathering coins from almost every state, filling books he had collected over the years.
He held his family close to his heart, and they knew they could depend on him. His love was steady and kind, shown through his listening ear, gentle guidance, and quiet strength. The love he gave and the example he set left a lasting impression on his family, and they will forever cherish his wisdom, his care, and the way he touched their lives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Gouldsby Haynes; father, Jessie James Haynes; mother, Johnnie Mae Hadden Haynes; sister, LaQuieta Roberts.
He is survived by his sons, Tyrone Haynes (Misja) of Rijswijk, The Netherlands; Kerry Mathews (Veronica) of Clute, Texas; Jonathan Haynes (Ashlei) of La Marque, Texas; daughters, Cassandra Bright (Edward) of Conroe, Texas; Angela Green (Michael) of Angleton, Texas; Heather “Ashley” Mathews of Clute, Texas; Maya Foster (John) of Conroe, Texas; brothers, Gary Haynes of Bay City, Texas; Kevin Haynes of Texas City, Texas; sisters, Brenda Sue Deadrick of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; Patsie Duffie (Otis) of Severn, Maryland; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2030 Brazosport Blvd N, Richwood, TX 77531.
