Joan Helton Obituary

Joan Marlene Helton

September 27, 1933 – February 7, 2024

Loving mother, Joan Marlene Helton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 7th after a short battle with lung cancer.  Joan was 90 and was surrounded by her two children.

Joan, born to James M. & Molly Joy Higgins on September 27, 1933 in Farmersville, Texas. She held many loving memories of her parents, brothers, and great grandmother throughout her life.  A lifelong desire to be a nurse was realized for Joan in 1967 when she finished nursing school and began a career that spanned approximately 50 years.  From public health nursing, to Infection Control Nurse, to hospital nursing supervisor, then eventually home health nursing and finally after several years as a hospice nurse she permanently retired at the age of 86 years old.  She cared for patients, coworkers, friends, and family with great compassion and kindness.  Joan began her journey with Christ in 1975 at the age of 42.  From that point forward she actively pursued Christ with a relationship that ran deep and for the rest of her life.  In that time Joan became a student of God’s word and over time a passion and calling developed to teach God’s word.

In 1981, Joan became an integral member of Brazoria First Assembly and continued there until her passing.  Over the years Joan taught Sunday School, Ladies’ groups, and discipleship groups.  She never turned down an opportunity to teach God’s word. In addition to teaching God’s word, Joan also developed a passion for missions.  Joan supported many missionaries over the years both financially and in prayer and in 2001 she temporarily retired from professional nursing to move to Santa Ana, El Salvador to work as a medical missionary for seven years.  During her time in El Salvador, Joan was able to work with medical teams and doctors from the US who would come and bring immunizations and other medical care to the children and families as well as spread the love of Christ.  Upon her return to the states in 2008, Joan went right back to nursing, working as a hospice nurse which she did for the next 10 years when she permanently retired from nursing.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, James M. & Molly Joy Higgins and her beloved sister-in-law Betty Higgins.  She is survived by her two children, son Stephen Helton & wife Christy, daughter Joy Helton, grandson Stephen Helton, brothers Jim Higgins and Tom Higgins, brother-in-law Pat Helton & wife Gladna and multiple great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, her sweet poodle Sophie, and many special people all who she deeply loved.

Pallbearers are Michael Brady, Aaron Davis, Dale Frankum II, Chris Khosla, Justin Martin, and Troy Willis.
