Hattie Wright Obituary

Funeral services for Hattie Mae Smith Wright,77, of Freeport will be Saturday, July 18, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church in Freeport, TX with Dr. J. V. Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Smith Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas.

On July 7, 1943, in Cedar Lake, Texas, a beautiful baby girl was born to Joyce Merchant and Wesley Smith who was named Hattie Mae Smith.

Hattie was reared in Cedar Lake, Texas and attended public schools in Bay City, Texas.

She worked as a domestic housekeeper for many years.

Hattie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas.  She was a former member of First Saint Emanuel Baptist Church, where she sang in the senior choir and served on the mission board and was also a former member of Second Baptist Church in Freeport, Texas. She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Freeport, TX, under the leadership of Bishop Jeff Williams, prior to her health failing. She loved cooking, baking, playing cards and bingo, talking on the telephone, watching television and spending time with her children and grandchildren. 

On Sunday, July 12, 2020, at El Campo Memorial Hospital in El Campo, Texas, at the age of 77, Hattie peacefully departed this life. Awaiting her in heaven are her parents, Joyce Merchant and Wesley Smith, Sr.; grandparents, Hammie Merchant, Sr. and Ophelia Durgan Merchant; stepmother, Mary Smith; son, Paul Davidson; brothers, George Merchant, Shephard Smith, and Wesley Smith, Jr.

Left to cherish her precious memories are her sons, Darryl Smith of Dallas, TX, Richard Smith (Lynn) of Angleton, TX, Adam Troy Davidson (Nancy) of Brazoria, TX, Lorenzo Smith, Sr. (Angela) of Suffolk, VA, Jeremiah Smith, Sr. (Tonya) of Katy, TX, and Ray Smith of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Esther Lynette Bonner of Freeport, TX; brother,  Vernice "Bo" Smith (Benita) of Sweeny, TX;  sisters Veola Parson of Freeport, TX, Mary Wright (Dave) and Katherine Bonner (A. C.) of Sweeny, TX,  Annie Lunford (Anthony) of Angleton, TX, Dora Bonner (Wilbert) of Clute, TX, Shirley Bullocks and Bobbie Wilcher (Joel) of Houston, TX, Evelyn McDonald of Texas City, TX, and Paulette Times (Rooney) of Brazoria, TX; 19 grandchildren, Lance Thompson (Shell), Isharay Jones, Sr. (Taisha), Ekira Jones, NaQui Davidson,  Lorenzo Smith, Jr., Damonric Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Jr., NaTroya Harper (Don), Cedric Smith, Zawari Bonner, Elouisa Smith, Gabriel Smith, Jazmin Smith, Zahria Bonner, Kyra Smith, Nathaniel Smith, Alan Smith, Zavier Bonner, and Jaylynn Smith; 13 great grandchildren, a special niece who she help raise, Sherounda Woodard; special friends, Beatrice Norris and Beaulah Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, July 17, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria.

Active pallbearers will be Darryl Smith, Richard Smith, Adam Troy Davidson, Lorenzo Smith, Sr., Jeremiah Smith, Sr. and Ray Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lance Thompson, Isharay Jones, Sr., Lorenzo Smith, Jr., Damonric Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Jr., Cedric Smith, Zawari Bonner, Gabriel Smith, Nathaniel Smith, Alan Smith, Zavier Bonner, and Vernice (Bo) Smith.

Due to the Covid 19 Virus, the funeral services will be private and everyone must wear a mask and practice social distancing.
