Dorothy McKinney Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Jean Abbott McKinney passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, in Pearland, Texas, at the remarkable age of 96. Born on September 16, 1929, in Smackover, Arkansas, Dorothy lived a long and beautiful life rooted in love, family, faith, and service. She was the daughter of Frances Lewis Abbott and Shephard Abbott, and from an early age she embraced strong values and a passion for learning.

Dorothy graduated from Charlie Brown School in 1949, later becoming a licensed cosmetologist through Franklin Beauty School and was once featured in a Beautician Club display at the Brazoria County Museum Black History Room. Always eager to grow, she went on to earn a certificate from Massey Business College, further enriching her personal and professional journey. She was instrumental in the process of preserving the original building of The Columbia Rosenwald School that was built in 1921, and served as the center of education for Black children living in the East Columbia area. The abandoned building was eventually moved into town and is now open for tours through the Columbia Historical Museum .

On November 6, 1952, Dorothy married the love of her life, R.H. McKinney, in Galveston, Texas. She was immediately welcomed and embraced by the McKinney family. The couple later relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, while R.H. served in the Army, before ultimately returning to her familiar and cherished roots in Old Ocean, Texas.

Dorothy approached every chapter of her life with dedication and heart. She worked for many years as a custodian for Sweeny Independent School District, where her kindness, reliability, and work ethic left a lasting impact on every staff, student and co-worker that she interacted with. After retiring, she continued doing what she loved most—caring for children. She worked at “Little Britches and Braids Daycare” until it went out of business, then decided to open a daycare in her own home, where countless children and families were touched by her gentle spirit and nurturing presence.

Dorothy’s faith was the foundation of her life. As a devoted member of Bethlehem A.M.E. Church, she served faithfully as an Usher, Sunday School teacher, and active participant in the YPD. Her church involvement reflected not only her deep love for God but also her commitment to uplifting her community.

Dorothy was a woman who made everyone feel at home. With her warm smile and generous heart, she never met a stranger. She loved cooking, hosting gatherings, and creating a home that radiated comfort and welcome. Whether offering a meal, sharing a kind word, or simply being present, Dorothy gave freely and wholeheartedly. She found joy in reading, caring for others, and keeping her door open to anyone in need. For Dorothy, helping others wasn’t just something she did—it was an expression of who she was.

Dorothy leaves behind her loving and devoted daughter, Theresa McKinney-Trusty, and son-in-law, Antonio Trusty; three grandchildren, Terina Burns-Williams, Avery Burns, and Tenise Burns; and three great-grandchildren, Trenton Williams, Mackenzie Williams, and Maizah Burns. She also leaves behind her lifelong friend and classmate, Tenola Franklin.

She is reunited in eternal peace with her husband, R.H. McKinney; her parents, Frances and Shephard Abbott; and many other beloved family members and friends who went before her.

Her legacy is one of kindness, strength, resilience, and unconditional love. May her memory continue to uplift and comfort all who were blessed to know her.
