Cheryl Jean VonCannon Brigance
Cheryl was born in Velasco, TX on June 30, 1945, to Geraldine and Curtis VonCannon Sr. She passed peacefully at her home in Sweeny, TX on June 16, 2024, surrounded by her family, after a long-fought battle with health issues. She was known by many names, but her favorites have always been Momma, Meme, and Sug.
She started her elementary years in Lake Jackson, TX where her father worked in the Mag fields for Dow Chemical. In the third grade, they moved to Brazoria, TX where she attended the Old Brazoria Elementary School. Her high school years were spent at West Columbia High School where she was a cheerleader. Cheryl was also a member of the track, volleyball, and basketball teams. She had a love for track and firmly believed that she was coached by the best…Lloyd Thomas. In 1972, Cheryl and her children moved to Green River, WY, but came back to Brazoria in 1974. In 1982, she made the move to Fairbanks, AK. While there she decided to pursue her career in education, so she attended and graduated from The University of Alaska in 1987. Not long after her graduation, the family moved back to Brazoria, TX where she began teaching third grade with none other than the great Scott McCaskill. She was proud to teach where she went to school. She was proud to be from Brazoria. It was truly her happy place. It was here where she met her lifelong friends…. Harriet Jennings, Susan Hatch, Karen Kingera, Linda Irwin, Jan Mayfield, Dorothy Byrd, Cora Mack, Nancy Boyd, Sharon Suggs, Missy Kelley, Camille Babb, Cindy Weathers, Sena Yates and Carolyn Reid. Cheryl was part of CBISD for 30+ years where she retired in 2011. She didn’t stay retired too long and ended up substituting almost every day until Covid hit in 2020. She was Teacher of the Year in 1996 and took great pride in that award.
Cheryl found comfort and peace in reading books, going to the library, poetry, rocking or swinging on the porch, and loved listening to the waves at the beach. Her greatest joy was being with her family, she loved each of them like no other. She never had a hesitation about a spontaneous trip.
Cheryl is proceeded in death by her parents Geraldine “Gigi” and Curtis “Poppy” VonCannon Sr., brothers Laurence “Larry” VonCannon and Curtis “Bud” VonCannon Jr, grandparents Harlan and Eula Mae Cottrell, grandparents Fred and Frankie VonCannon, Aunt Mattie Priest, grandson baby Phillip Brigance, and grandson Beau Maraist.
She leaves to cherish her memories daughter Lisa Brigance of Sweeny, TX, son Russell Brigance (Debbie) of Brazoria, TX, son Kevin Brigance (Kelly) of Brazoria, TX, sister-in-law Barabara VonCannon of West Columbia, TX, granddaughters Stephany Miller (Michael) of Sweeny, TX, Jessica Rangel (Matt) of Caldwell, TX, Jill Charanza (Aaron) of Rogers, TX, Bailey Brigance of Brazoria, TX, grandson Jacob Brigance (Meghan) of Brazoria, TX. Great granddaughters Madison Albair, Shelby Miller, Rian Charanza, Bella, and Matti Rangel. Great grandsons Kaden Rangel, Christopher Albair, Coy Miller, Branson, Bostyn, and Brixtyn Charanza. Great great granddaughter Parker Groze. Along with a host of nieces and nephews.
