Bernice Travis Obituary

Memorial services for Bernice Travis, 92, of Jacksonville, NC will be held on a future date. The immediate family will conduct a private burial ceremony.

Bernice gained her heavenly wings on Monday, September 16, 2024, at Memorial Hermann – Pearland.

She was a member of Washington Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Jacksonville NC.  She was also a former member of Montford Point Marine Association, Inc – Auxiliary.

Bernice was a MATRIARCH!  A loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Ma, as she was affectionately known, ensured all four of her children graduated from college.  She was one of the most generous people you could ever meet.  She delivered multiple babies during her nursing career before race integration, in Athens, GA and one baby delivered after integration at Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital-Maternity Ward.

She loved gardening, crocheting, knitting, cooking, and sewing.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Ret GySgt. William Travis, Jr.; daughter, Clydia Elizabeth Travis; parents, Willie and Lula Long; brothers, Willie Long Jr, James Long, Howard Long; and sisters, Lula Thompson, Corine Hawthorne.

Ma/Granny leaves precious memories with her sons, William Travis III(Patricia) of Missouri City, TX and Burnis Earl Travis (Donna) of Iowa Colony, TX; daughter, Arline Travis of Houston, TX; brother, Paul Long of Chicago, IL; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; special friends, Joan Craddock-Griffin, Bill and Ada Council, Deacon Jimmie and Marion Mason; and, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
