James Hebert Obituary

James Elroy Hebert was born to Elverine Rivers Hebert and Leon Hebert on September 12, 1956. Elroy was one of his mother’s ten babies.

Elroy spent his childhood years in Blessing, Texas where he learned of and confessed Christ at an early age. He was soon baptized under the pastorage of the late Rev. Calvin L. Luddington. James Elroy accepted a call to minister under Pastor Calvin Amboree in 1992, and preached his first sermon at Living Word Outreach Church in Bay, City, Texas.

Elroy’s educational background consisted of elementary beginnings at A. Jefferson, the school of negroes before desegregation. Elroy graduated from Tidehaven High School in 1976, and went on to attend Texas State Technical Institute where he became a licensed welder. It was a passion spawned by watching and at times assisting the one who helped to guide over and care for him, Amos Deadrick. Welding came easy considering all the hot days of summer in the hay fields or rice fields with his Uncle Charlie. Welding was most certainly a welcome task; if Elroy had to go work at the rice dryer with his Uncle David and Roy Miller. Later on he began a tree trimming business. Elroy had always been adventurous and accident prone; thankfully, God sent his angels to carry him to someone who could help him. Thankfully, Shelia, the beautiful young woman he had married in earlier years, helped nurse him back to health. The family trait of fishing was probably his safest joy in life, which he love to do with family. The Hebert and Rivers families love a get together and if Poppa was not in the midst, he was truly missed as he will be now.

James Elroy transitioned from earth to a new life on February 16, 2019. He now leaves all of us to remember him. He leaves his four children; Brannon Harris (Maggie) of Austin, TX, Shercarmen Burnett (LaJuan), James Curtis and Jeremy Hebert all of Angleton, TX. Six surviving siblings; Leon Hebert Jr. of Stafford, TX, Joycelyn Peterson (Vince) of Brazoria TX, Yolanda Green-Jones of Houston, TX, Teri Thomas (Jerome) of Pearland, TX, Tracey Jefferson (Regginald) of Bay  City, TX, Kathleen Blaine (Oliver) of Katy TX. Eight grandchildren; Jordan, McKinnely, Madison, Torris LaJuan, Jayvion, James Curtis, Jr., JJ, Tamia, one great granddaughter and a host of much loved nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

James Elroy was proceeded in death by his grandparents Batiste and Dora Cormier Hebert, Emmit and Lola Franklin Rivers, his parents Leon Sr. and Eleverine Rivers Hebert, Amos Deadrick; four siblings Curtis Lee, Ronald Keith, Emmitt, and Brenda.

The Kahuna reigned where he played and was deeply loved with his big smile, and his loud mouth. He will be so dearly missed. But, if we only believe and confess (Romans 10:9); we will be together again...HELLO SOMEBODY!
