Nettie Lee Jammer Helm
February 1, 2010

Mrs. Nettie Lee Jammer Helm,
beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend transitioned
to eternal rest on the evening of Monday, February 1, 2010.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Nettie Lee Jammer Helm, 93, of Brazoria will be Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Temple A.M.E., Brazoria, TX, with Rev. Larry D. Griggs, Sr., officiating and Rev. Ralph Martin, eulogizing. Burial will follow at Mims Cemetery.

She was born the 6th child of 7 total children, on July 4, 1916 to Isom and Tammer Bell Jammer in the Mims community of Brazoria, Texas where she remained a lifelong resident until she answered God’s call. On October 29, 1934 she married George Helm, Sr. and they were blessed with three children, 2 daughters and 1 son. In the early years of marriage and in the midst of the depression, she and her husband were entrepreneurial partners in the ownership and operation of the Williams & Helm Grocery Store. After her husband’s sudden death in 1956, she was left with the sole responsibility to care for her children. With a strong determination to persevere, she charted a new course to provide for them through her primary occupation as a cook. She was employed as the head cook at the Angleton Nursing Home for many years before formally retiring in the late 70s. She also worked at other restaurant eateries in the local area including, KFC of both Bay City & Lake Jackson, SK’s of Brazoria and more.

Mrs. Nettie was a lifelong member of Zion Temple AME Church where she faithfully served in many ministries, including the Stewardess Board, Senior Citizen’s Ministry and her much-loved, Food ServiceMinistry. Indeed, if there was a special event at the church and the rich smells of good food were drifting from the cafeteria, you would be certain to find Mrs. Nettie, the Queen of the Kitchen, on her post overseeing the preparation of each plate with meticulous detail and the cleanup of the area with commanding influence.

In addition to her work at the church, she also enjoyed service in the community as a member of the Eastern Star and the San Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department. Her other pleasures included gardening, yard work, quilting and chatting with family and friends.

Still, there was nothing she delighted in more than her family. She treasured each and every member and relished in her role as the proud matriarch of her family and wouldn’t mind letting anyone know that her role was “the head” lest they get beside themselves and forget.
Without a doubt, Mrs. Nettie’s life was characterized by faith, strength, courage, tolerance, temperance, and a selfless giving to others, whether it was found in her taking the time to cut fresh gardenias from shrubs to surprise the local mail carrier or offering a sound word of advice to someone facing one of life’s difficulties, despite the fact, that she, herself, was staring down hardships of her own. Coupled with her guiding wisdom and profound knowledge, she gave credence to the mantra that “if I can help somebody as I travel along, if I can help somebody with a word or song, if I can help somebody from doing wrong, then my living shall not be in vain.” Certainly, the lives of all the people she touched are as many “as the stars of heaven” in number and can be identified by her light that will continue to shine in their hearts.

She was preceded in death by many loved ones, including her parents, 3 brothers, 2 sisters and 1 grandson. Yet, her memory and legacy will continue on in the lives of her two daughters, Vesta R. Austin, Brazoria, TX and Jessie Jean Helm, Van Vleck, TX; her son, George Helm, Jr. (Lucille), Lake Jackson, TX; her, sister Para L. Hanks, Evanston, IL; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Active Pallbearers will be Steven D. Helm, Earnest Jammer, John H. Jammer, Jr., Willie Jammer, Jr., Rodney D. Saveat, and Larry James Williams.

Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday, February 5, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria.

Send online condolences to www.dixonfuneralhome.com
